The race will travel approximately 1.6 miles on the Jordan River Parkway Trail to Main Street before runners will head back to Gardner Village for closing award ceremonies. This is the first annual 5k for the club and is focused on generating funds for children’s programs like Key Club, Terrific Kids, the Midvale Baby Cupboard, and the like.

The oldest of these is the Legion of Honor program for members who have been a member for at least 25 years. At our regular weekly meeting the Kiwanis Club of Midvale/Ft. Union honored Glen Purdie for consistently serving in the organization for 25 years.

One Kiwanis member reminisced, “A few things that immediately come to mind [is Glen's] involvement in the Key Club [of Oakland] and how much the kids like [him]. [He would] work side by side with them in their service projects…One year we had six Key Clubbers going to convention so [glen and his wife] helped arrange limousine transportation. The kids had such a great time “being celebrities” in their chauffeur driven limo that the next year we had tripled the number of kids for convention.”

Glen continues to be an example of witty, light-hearted humor, and dedicated service to those in need – particularly children in the community. We are grateful for him, his wife, and all he has done in the past 25 years for Kiwanis. Here’s to the next 25!

In late November the Kiwanis Club of Midvale/Fort Union contacted Carmen Contreras, a Victims Advocate with the Midvale Police Department. We requested a referral for a family we could support as a Sub-for-Santa.  Ms. Contreras came through very quickly with a single-mother and her four young children ages nine to one-month.

We received a “need list” for warm coats and blankets and a single “want” for each child. The Club decided that the needs were immediate and started gathering the necessary items – including parkas for all (except the baby), warm blankets, and warm clothes.  These gifts were delivered early in December, along with some much needed food – including the turkey for Christmas dinner!

Once the Club realized that this family was in need of some additional items for the apartment and the family, we moved to obtain and deliver them the middle of December. This included some pots, pans, and general cooking supplies.

Finally, near Christmas, presents from Santa along with food that would provide for some time beyond the holiday, were delivered. What a joy to see the smiles from the Children and the warm thanks from Mom.  This is what makes these kinds of projects worthwhile and what Kiwanis is all about.
